Cookbooks

My first cookbook, called Food in Jars: Preserving in Small Batches Year Round, was published by Running Press in May 2012. It is currently available wherever books are sold. Here are a few purchasing options:

Get it from a local-to-you bookseller.
Get it from Powell’s.
Get it from Amazon.
Get it here from Barnes and Noble.
Get it here from Chapters (for you Canadian folks).

I’m currently working on a book about super small batch canning, which will be published by Running Press in Spring 2014.

I am envious and so proud of you both at the same time! I follow your blog, read your recipes, hints, tips, “thumbs up” stories, and even your “wouldn’t make this again” truths. I would have loved to have been a writer, love to cook, can, recipes, just a closet “foodie.” Sometimes I think people at work think I need a hobby, as food and cooking seem to be on my mind quite often. Congrats to you. I am happy for YOU.

Thanks so much, Nancy. And you know, it’s never too late to become a writer. Create a blog and start practicing. That’s how I found my way to where I am now.

Thanks for the inspiration. I am on vacation this week. I am googling “how to start a blog.” I love to read others, and have often thought of it myself. I will try to squeeze in some info between making my lemon strawberry marmalade, teaching myself to crochet, working on a knitting project, and maybe cleaning a window or two with the sunny days we are having in Michigan……or maybe skip the cleaning of windows!

I grew up spending alot of time with my grandmother. This was one of the things she taught me. It seems to be a dying art. I am only 55 years old and people don’t take the time to do canning anymore. I actually made blueberry jam last year and also strawberry jam. This looks like an interesting book. I will look for it when it comes out. Thank you for writing it.

there are a lot of us young women that are getting into canning now (and just crafting in general). it is something my girlfriends and i share even though we are scattered across the country. we upload pictures of what we’ve made, share recipes, and even decorating/label design ideas for when we give home canned food as gifts. there is a movement happening right now among young people to re-learn the skills that were never passed to us for whatever reason, and i love it!

I will gladly be put in the group of young women getting into canning.. Though I am not sooo young! I found your site recently and used your recipe for fruit butters to make some peach butter( I had last years peaches in freezer) and have to say it was fabulous! I have made apple butter and strawberry and peach jams in the past and LOVE canning! If you ever head south (Georgia!) I would certainly attend your class! Cant wait to get the book

Congratulations from Kansas on your book. I have just pre ordered it from Amazon. Love your site and I love the fact we can do small batches. Last summer I purchased a Rikon Kuhn asparagus steamer with a basket. Love it for steaming, processing a couple of jars, etc. We have 9 fruit trees and as of today they are loaded with new fruit, Peaches, cherries, 1 plum, apples. Hope the freezes are over for the season.
Have fun on your signing tour.

    Hi Marisa,
Am tempted to buy your book but have one question: do you use a great deal of “pomona pectine” in your recipes? Since I’m residing in Norway, I obviously don’t have access to this and it can be a wee bit tricky to re-calculate amounts to the brands they possibly have here… And making yor own just rises questions about how to, storage time etc…
    Happy for any input! :)

    • 29.1
      Marisa says:

Nope, no Pomona’s Pectin. I use either liquid or powdered pectin in the jam and jelly recipes. The bulk of the recipes in the book don’t even call for pectin at all!

My husband has ben reading your blog for months and ordered the cookbook last week. He has never canned anything, but the other day made and canned a batch of orange rhubarb jam that is simply transcendent. I picked up the cookbook the other day and couldn’t put it down. There’s something about the way you write that makes your enthusiasm for canning and pickling contagious. I’ve never tried anything like this before, but today I’m off to get beets and okra for pickling. I’ll let you know how it turns out! (We love reading your references to your Unitarian congregation; there’s something about knowing you’re a fellow UU that helps us see that if you can do it, we can do it, too!)

Just thought I’d let you know I adore your cookbook. I flipped through the entire cookbook, ooing and ahhing. Then I proceeded to preserve three batches in one day, all from your cookbook: Vanilla Rhubarb Jam with Earl Grey, Rhubarb Syrup and Pickled Asparagus. Thanks for helping me start my canning season early!

I got your book last week and already made three of the rhubarb recipes–all amazing. And then, this morning, I made the pancake mix and cooked them up. I have so far been stumped by pancakes (never having good luck getting them to be fluffy) but your recipe was sooo good, we loved the millet crunchies! That recipe will be my go-to from now on. Great served with the Rhubarb Vanilla jam and the Rhubarb Strawberry Orange jam. Thanks!

    Marisa,
First of all, I love, love, love the recipes in your book. Having said that, have you looked at the pickled green tomatoes recipe (pg 142)? It really is confusing because the ingredient list is wrong. I’m going to try it, because I have tons of green tomatoes that were knocked off in the wind, and I think I know what is wrong with the ingredient list, but just wanted to point it out for future printings.
    Happy 4th!!
