Canning Classes at Indy Hall
These classes are held in the Indy Hall kitchen (22 N. 3rd Street, Philadelphia, PA) and run from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Each costs $50 (cash or check, please). All students take home one jar of the product made in class that day, along with a print-out of the recipe and loads of new knowledge. To sign up for one of these classes, email foodinjars@gmail.com.
July 13 – Plum-Apricot Preserves! This class will focus on boiling water bath canning and combining different kinds of fruits for successful pectin-free jam making.
August 10 – Pickles! This class will focus on vinegar-based pickles. A deeply hands-on class, students will make quick cucumber and preserved green bean pickles and will take both varieties home to compare and contrast.
September 14 – Tomatoes! In this class, we’ll make a batch of tomato jam and talk about all the ins and outs of canning tomatoes. Both boiling water bath and pressure canning will be discussed.
October 12 – Spiced Apple Pie Filling! This class will give students an opportunity to help peel, chop and process 10 pounds of apples down into a batch of fragrant, spicy apple pie filling.

Classes in Philadelphia and Beyond
May 31 through June 2 – I’ll be speaking at Eat, Write, Retreat. I’m doing a short canning class as well as a session on writing cookbooks and unraveling the publishing process for new authors. If you’re interested in learning more or signing up, click here.
May 16 – Pickling class at the Glenside Library. It’s a free event and starts at 6:30 pm. Come out!
May 19 – Strawberry Vanilla Jam at Blooming Glen Farm in Perkasie, PA from 10 am – 12 noon. Click here to sign up and for more details.
June 15 – Canning at the Morris Arboretum in Chestnut Hill, PA from 10 am – 12 noon. We’ll talk canning and cook through a batch of strawberry vanilla name. All levels of students are welcome. Click here to sign up.
July 20 – Come learn about jam making and boiling water bath canning with me at Longview Farm Market in Collegeville, PA. We’ll be making a batch of low sugar plum jam using Pomona’s Pectin. The class runs from 11 am – 1 pm and costs $35 to attend. Click here to sign up.
August 1 – Come learn to pickle your garden produce at the Massachusetts Horticultural Society in Wellesley, MA. This class will walk you through the steps of pickling and boiling water bath canning in this two-hour hands-on Dilly Bean workshop. You’ll learn how to tackle a mess of beans and have the opportunity to ask all your burning preserving questions. The class runs from 6 – 8 pm and costs $55 ($50 for MassHort members). August 3 – I’m returning to Create-a-Cook in Newton Highlands, MA for a pair of classes. For beginning and intermediate canners, from 10 am – 1 pm, we’re offering a boiling water bath class that will feature jam and pickles. For the more advanced folks, check out the pressure canning class from 2 – 5 pm. Both classes cost $68.
August 17 - A massive tomato canning workshop at Blooming Glen Farm in Perkasie, PA. I’m going to set up a bunch of burners and we’ll can enough tomatoes for everyone to take home 2-3 quarts (final yield will depend on how much we’re able to get through that day). It costs $75 and will be a sweaty, fun, productive day. Sign up link coming soon.

This summer, I’m teaching a bunch of jam classes at The Brooklyn Kitchen in Brooklyn, New York. If you call that area home, this is your opportunity to take a class with me. For $350, I will come to your house with all the supplies needed for a batch of seasonal and local jam or pickles. Invite your friends (groups of no more than six or seven people, please) over and learn how to preserve your own food! I also do larger classes and public demos, fees for those services vary. Do you have space for 2 adults in your August 30th class?
Also, would it be possible to arrange a private class in Seattle while you are in town? I could easily put together six to eight adults who are actively interested in canning – not much notice for you – but thought it would ask if it would be possible.
