Canning Classes

My Indy Hall canning classes are done for 2011. However, classes will pick up again in February 2012. These classes are held in the Indy Hall kitchen at 20 N. 3rd Street, 2nd floor, Philadelphia, PA and run from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Each costs $50. All students take home one jar of the product made in class that day, along with a print-out of the recipe and loads of new knowledge. To sign up for one of these classes, email foodinjars@gmail.com.

February 4 – Meyer lemon jelly
March 3 – Blood orange marmalade
April 7 – Pickled asparagus
May 12 – Strawberry rhubarb jam

I’m available for private group canning classes, as mentioned in this Daily Candy article. For $350, I will come to your house with all the supplies needed for a batch of seasonal and local jam or pickles. Invite your friends (groups of no more than six or seven people, please) over and learn how to preserve your own food! I also do larger classes and public demos, fees for those services vary. If any of these options interests you, shoot me an email at foodinjars@gmail.com.

[...] Still too timid to attempt marmalade on your own? The best way to get your feet wet is to take a class or observe a pro. Luckily, you don’t have to go to cross the Atlantic to find skilled marmalade makers. On the west coast, check out classes offered by Brit expat June Taylor of June Taylor Jams or Rachel Saunders of Blue Chair Fruit Company. Easterners, check out Marisa McClellan’s, of foodinjars.com, class in Philadelphia next week. [...]

    Greetings -

Do you have space for 2 adults in your August 30th class? :)

Also, would it be possible to arrange a private class in Seattle while you are in town? I could easily put together six to eight adults who are actively interested in canning – not much notice for you – but thought it would ask if it would be possible.

    Thanks much.
