    Marissa,

I have a piece of mystery equipment to decipher, and I’m hoping you can help. At least, we are fairly certain it’s a canning implement of some kind. It consists of a round, domed metal piece, with a pivoting arm. Attached to the arm is a second lever that appears to be a press or a shaper arm. The rounded part is close to, but not quite, the size of a mason jar lid, and more closely fits some older solid zinc lids. The piece in question is not in my possession (my cousin in Iowa has it) but I have some pictures of it. Reading this, the description is a bit cryptic. It could be we are way off base, but it came with some other canning items from his wife’s grandmother, so we are thinking it is a tool related to an older method of canning.

Love the site and the recipes, especially the stuff that keeps coming over the winter months. It gets pretty dull and rainy here in Oregon in the off season- a splash of color and a new recipe helps lighten the day.

If you have the time, I’d be interested to send you the pictures of this very odd item to see if you have some insight on it. Thanks!

    Dear Marissa:
I’m sending you this email because we are interested in publishing some of the recipes you posted on your blog Food In Jars, with their photos and the appropiate mention of author.
I’m a journalist and work at Cukmi.com, a publication specialized in food that’s a spin off of La Nacion national newspaper (lanacion.com) from Argentina.
At Cukmi we publish different stories about food production, economy and consumption, but now we are adding a new section with recipes (like a Food Blog index) and will love to include one or two recipes from your blog and a short story about you and your work.
Would that be OK for you?
Thanks in advance for your attention. I look forward to hearing from you.
