Giveaway: Cozy Family Jar Cozies and Pattern

pints and quarts

When I was in my early years of jar love, a girl could get some pretty funny looks when she sidled up to the counter at a coffee shop and asked the barista to fill a pint jar with 16 ounces of hot brew. Happily, with the advent of the Cuppow, EcoJarz, and other drink toppers, seeing someone use a mason jar as a travel mug has gotten downright ordinary. The only issue these days is finding an appropriately heat resistent wrapper, so that you don’t burn your tender fingertips.

pint jar cozy

Looks pretty nice on one of the new blue glass jars, doesn’t it!

Katie Startzman, one half the crafty pair known as Duo Fiberworks and a fan of reusable containers of all stripes, could see that as more people used jars as coffee mugs and lunch-time travelware, there was a world of vessels that needed a little extra insulation and padding.

And so, as an expert in the world of fibercraft, she has devised a pattern for knitted and felted cozy that can be made to fit 11 different sizes of jars, bottles, jugs, and vessels. Called the Cozy Family, this pattern is available on Ravelry and makes me wish even more fervently that I’d get my act together and relearn how to knit.

Recently, Katie got in touch with me and offered up a couple pre-made cozies and five copies of the complete pattern for a Food in Jars giveaway. Because I’m always interested in supporting small businesses (particularly those with jar-related products), I said yes and she sent over the cozies so I could photograph them for this post. Included in the package was a hand-painted, quart-sized cozy featuring the FiJ logo!

This giveaway will have five winners. All five will get a copy of the complete Cozy Family pattern and one super lucky winner will also get a pair (pint and quart sized) of Katie-made cozies that they can slip onto jars immediately. Here’s how to enter:

  1. Leave a comment on this post and tell me about your favorite crafty outlet. Do you like fabric and fiber? Paper and pigments? Or are you more like me and go in for the edible crafts? All creative endeavors are welcome!
  2. Comments will close at 11:59 pm on Friday, March 22, 2013. Winners will be chosen at random and will be posted to the blog over the weekend.
  3. Giveaway open to all.
  4. One comment per person, please. Entries must be left via the comment form on the blog at the bottom of this post.

Those are so cute! I can pretty much only knit scarves, but I’m sure one of my crafty knitting friends could help me out…

Love the jar! Definitely want a box!

While I love canning, I sew more these days than any other crafty endeavor. I love to refinish furniture, but I’ve hit maximum capacity for those kind of DIY projects.

My crafty outlet is baking. But I’ve also been known to dabble in making casts of baby bellies, and flower pens. The blue jars look so lovely in your pictures, I am going on the hunt for some! Thank you!

Canning and baking are my creative outlets. I have recently started using jars for coffee on the go and would love to have some cozies to use. I do knit and could also give the patterns a whirl to make my own.

Lately I’ve been into repurposing leather and suede for earring, bracelets, and hair clips but traditionally I’m a sewer, crocheter, canner, candlestick maker…just kidding about the last. Maybe some day though :)

Oh, I love these! I am heavy into the “functional” crafts: gardening, cooking, lots and lots of knitting (I learned how to knit when I was nine, and it’s been crazy madness ever since!) I am perpetually losing my to-go cups. I don’t know why–perhaps because they are cheap plastic and/or pseudo-stainless giveaways from vendors, trying to solicit sales? Anyhow, I have yet to lose one of my beloved mason jars–those things are a hot commodity–and it would be lovely to have a cozy to squeeze one into as I tool down the road on some errand or other. I’m going to look up this pattern, as well as some of the drink lids mentioned in the post!

I am a knitter, still learning a lot of stuff, I feel like I am always learning something new. I recently made a felted rug, and since then have been of a felting kick. I used the left over yarn from that project to make my sweet kitty homemade felted mice, and of course they are striped, she doesn’t know any better. She’s never even seen a real mouse. But yes these look amazing, my husband and I use mason jars for everything from coffee, to juicing, to togo containers for soups when I go to work. Anyway would love to have this pattern. I do dabble in other hobbies as well, paint, build things for the house, learning to cook (I love to bake but not a great cook, my husband is the cook at our house, but I am getting better) working on my first quilt too, although if my mom wasn’t helping me I probably would have lost my mind by now. Thanks Mom!

I like to think I’m decent with paper goods, but they probably only come across as doodles on blank goods. My outlet and language of love are definitely edible. Bread and a jar of apple butter? You got it.

    Emily B says:

I crochet, knit quilt, sew and various non-specific crafts! I’ve done felting with crochet and needle felting, but have yet to try fulling a knitted item. These would be lovely gifts too! Thanks for the lovely giveaway!

These look great! I’ve been looking for similar patterns, though mostly in the realm of sewing rather than knitting (I do both). I’d really love the pattern!

I’m more into the edible crafts, and the photographing of them. I do knit, but only in the very simplest forms. I had this lady turn her fingerless mitten pattern into jar cozies for me. They were a bit long when I first bought them, but now with the 20 oz. tall jars they fit perfectly. http://www.etsy.com/listing/67008100/what-a-hoot-owl-fingerless-mittens

    Lisa says:

I love the dense medium in those cozies! Would be great for sending soups to work with my hubby! We use jars whenever we can!
My craftiness goes in spurts….depending on the seasons of work and of mommyhood and what I decide on a whim to get into! I love to craft things out of “found” items…from markets or from outdoors…and often mimic nature even when I’m not intending to. Right now, I have a bunch of old empty goose eggs that I got at a country auction….this should be fun!

My Mother taught me all things creative. I love to knit, crochet, paint, cast, sew, mold, bake, cook, can, you name it….I just wish Pinterest was there when my Mother was still here. She would have loved every ones ideas and treasures. I would love to have the pattern for these wonderful cozies. The one thing I have never done is felting and would love to learn. Oh and Love Love Love “FOOD IN A JAR”!! Thank you!!

These are so very very cute. I enjoy many crafts and am even involved in a craft club that meets monthly. Last month hypertufa pots, this month soap making. A person or 2 sign up to teach even if they’ve never done it before. There’s no expectation for the class to be led by an expert. It’s really fun.

I’m a tie-dye maven! I really started doing it when my daughter was young, and then realized it’s potential for hiding stains! So…napkins, dish towels, washcloths….all things that need help resisting (hiding) stains. I’ve branched out to comfy bamboo socks, bamboo baby onesies, etc.
