I've never tried going to pick anything other than apples, but because of your entry, I went out to Rowand Farms last Sunday and had a ball.

We're thinking of going back July 5th to try for sour cherries.

went to Willow Creek Orchard yesterday, completely organic and also full of local produce, dairy, etc. in their market. GREAT strawberries, $2.75/# for >10#, looks pricey next to other places you listed. But completely organic, and they have lovely looking blueberries, and many fruit trees for later this summer. 30 Mi. from Philly. Went with my 4 young kids and 4 other families carpooling - about 18 people in all, hit HEAVY traffic both ways, took over 90 mins going back to Philly.

For people a little farther east in NJ, I've heard good things about Silverton Farm in Tom's River. It's organic, but I don't know about the agro-tainment quotient yet. (Love that term though!) We're planning to go in the next few weeks, so I'll report back once we do.

I have been eagerly awaiting strawberry (and pea!) season. I go to Solly Brothers in Ivyland (it might be listed as Warminster if you google it). It's barely ten minutes from my house, and their pyo is amazing! I wait all year for English peas, but they have other fruits and veggies too. I asked them once why their strawberries taste so different from other ones- apparently they grow an older, out of favor cultivar. It's more difficult to harvest, and the berries are smaller, but the taste is incredible!

I am a pyo junkie and really miss my dad's big garden. I went to Sauvie Island a few years ago and picked a ridiculous amount of fruit, especially given that I was staying in a b&b! Thanks for the NJ suggestions. I've also been wanting to try Willow Creek Orchards in Collegeville, http://www.willowcreekorchards.com/, which I found via this site: http://www.pickyourown.org/PAeast.htm. Happy picking!

another place to try out ... in media, pa : linvilla orchards
i believe they have strawberries! (not sure how they compare crop/price/etc wise!)

Thanks Linda! I've actually been out to Linvilla many times over the years. Their produce is good, but I find the agro-tainment aspect they've got going on to be a little bit overwhelming. But, in the fall, they are one of the best places around for apple picking. -Marisa

Growing up in the sticks of central PA, you'd think I would have gone to a u-pick farm already, but I have not! Over the last several years, I have wanted to go to one, but still have not. I never even would have considered asking questions about containers or if it's ok to taste them while picking or even price differences! So thanks for the tips. Hopefully I can check one of these places out this summer.

Andi, I'm glad my tips were helpful! -Marisa

I love Mood's. I used to live for their cider donuts!

Yoko, I ate more of their cider doughnuts last summer than I care to admit. They are delicious! -Marisa

Mood's is the best! I grew up 10 minutes from their farm and love picking cherries and blueberries there.
And the Gaventa's are good people!

Oh, wonderful! Thanks Courtney! -Marisa
