I’m planning on writing up the pickled asparagus later tonight (I wanted to give it a couple of days to get nice and zingy before opening up a jar to taste it). To tide us all over until then (think of it as a late-afternoon snack), I’ve got a couple of things that I’ve been visiting and re-visiting all week that I thought some of you might enjoy.
The first is this incredible shot of jars, filled with buttons, pins and other crafty doodads. My friend Angie found it on the Craftzine blog and they found it over on Unplggd, Apartment Therapy’s home tech site. I love it because it shows off a gaggle (or would that be a flock?) of jars, doing what they do best, holding stuff (although it would be better if they were full of food).
The other thing I absolutely love are these paintings by Marissa Verechia. I actually own a couple of her pieces, but I’m wondering if I should dig down and buy some of these that feature the jars. I particularly love this one, of the egg and yogurt jar.
And tonight? I do believe I’ll be making this pickled red onion. Results to be posted soon.

I love this website. I love canning jars too, and I’m always looking for new things to can, ferment, pickle, or otherwise preserve.
Keep doing what you’re doing, because I need the inspiration.
I’m going to make a quick red onion pickle to go with a “faux gras” I made for dinner, but you’re inspired me to make Orangette’s pickled onions too.
Try Deb’s quick pickled onions:

They’re delicious on sandwiches. Especially on this sandwich from Dorie Greenspan:

Sarah, all Deb’s pickles are on my list of recipes I want to try out. She did a giardiniera a couple of years ago that I can’t get out of my mind. Also, definitely let me know if there’s something you’d like to see here or if you have questions! -Marisa
Love pickled red onions … I look forward to seeing the asparagus too…
Hi Marissa!
Thanks for the response.
I did make both versions of pickled onions the other night too. Deb’s pickled onions were delicious, but the Orangette recipe just wasn’t for me. I still have them in my fridge. My Mom is coming down in a few weeks, and I think she might like them.
Thanks for the reminder on the giardiniera… I meant to make that too. I’m still debating making the pickled grapes she made recently though. I don’t know how I feel about pickled grapes.
Sarah, sorry to hear that the Orangette recipe didn’t work for you. I admit, I’ve yet to get to it, as I’ve been busy with work and the basic cooking of life. I’m really uncertain about Deb’s pickled grapes. I’m really not sure they will float my boat, but I’m feeling tugged in their direction despite my skepticism. -Marisa
